Bell, Book and Candle
By John Van Druten, Directed by Mark Giesser
A whimsical romantic comedy about a young witch who grapples with her feelings for a charming tenant, set against the backdrop of 1950s London.
16 February - 11 March 2023
Book TicketsA revival of the 1950’s magical romantic comedy that inspired the TV series Bewitched.
It’s Christmas Eve in London, 1954, but young witch Gillian Holroyd's mood is more restless than festive. She wants something different this season, perhaps in the form of her attractive new tenant, Tony Henderson. Yet he’s going to announce his engagement to her old school rival on New Year’s Eve.
Gillian could use her extraordinary magical powers to bind him with a spell, but that wouldn’t be much of a challenge. Can she win his affections without resorting to the dark arts? And what will it do to her if she succeeds?
Leading the cast as charming witch-next-door Gillian is Beth Burrows, winner of the Off West End award last year for ‘Best Supporting Performance’ for her appearance as Princess Maria in the UK revival of Call Me Madam. Bewitched by Gillian is her love interest Tony, played by Edward Hayes-Neary who has starred in The Crown and Bridgerton alongside many West End Musicals.
Long time visitors to the Tabard may recognise Zoë Teverson as Aunt Queenie (Gigi, Tabard 2015) and Richard Lynson as Sidney Redlitch (Lady with a Dog, Tabard 2018) and completing the cast is Daniel Breakwell as Nicky Holroyd.
Van Druten’s enchanting tale became a hit Hollywood film with Kim Novak and James Stewart, and inspired the beloved television series Bewitched. With its witty script and cast of five lovable characters, this enchanting show will leave you spellbound.
