A Critical Stage

A Critical Stage is an amusing and provocative exploration of the roles of critic and artist set against the backdrop of wartime London. This stylish new drama delves into the tumultuous clash between creativity and evaluation, offering rich insights into the world of a renowned critic during the Blitz. The play is perfect for those who appreciate sharp wit and historical context.

In 1942, amidst the blackouts and rationing of London, James Agate, a famous author and theatre critic, refuses to alter his extravagant lifestyle despite the looming threats of war. While he continues his high-living ways and illicit encounters, bombshells threaten to shatter his world. Agate's provocative review of Gwen, a prominent actress, leads to an engaging war of words, while his relationships with Smike, a tolerant houseboy, and Leo, his volatile secretary, become increasingly complicated.

The play is based on real-life events, portraying Agate as a self-educated polymath whose contributions shaped the cultural landscape of mid-twentieth century Britain.
